Fighting rogues is either super easy or very tough. They are super easy if you get the jump on them. They typically have around the same health as a priest, so a Blast and a DOT and a few flays is enough to take them down.
Unfortunately you only get the jump on stupid rogues (or rogues that are busy with mobs). When they get the jump on you is much more difficult. If you see the rogue (or hear the stealth sound) immediately pop shield, then pop Touch of Weakness (you’ll understand in a moment) a if you get a chance. Rogues will typically open with some stuns. Count to three then pop your anti stun trinket then immediately Fear. By the third second the rogue has become convinced you don’t have the anti stun trinket and is ready for his second series of locks. This should buy you an extra few seconds, and every second counts.
As soon as you hit fear drop both your DOTs on the rogue, renew on yourself (if you aren’t in shadow form) or VE if you have it and are in shadow form, throw up a shield, dispel magic the rogue (any pots he has on or a buff from a friend) and run the opposite direction as the rogue. He will pop his trinket then sprint at you.
When he reaches you, spin around and stick him once, then immediately start spamming Flash Heal (an alternative is to cast mind control on the rogue). When you stick him, the Touch of Weakness proccs and he loses 10-20% of his basic attack power. Spam Flash Heal until your scream is up again. He will get his five point combo off before this happens, but your heals should put you up enough to survive it (just barely). Also turn in circles, this pisses them off, and prevents backstab rogues from staying behind you. Now that you have survived for the second scream, the rogue is dead, he just doesn’t know it yet. Blast him, then renew yourself, re-shield yourself, and Flay him.
Dead rogue. Sound easy? As a well equipped shadow priest you can expect to beat rogues about 50% of the time. They are not impossible (like the forums would lead you to believe) you simply have to keep your cool to survive. A very well equipped Combat Shadow priest can just blast through a rogue, but the more conservative approach described above provides a higher likelihood of survival.
